Your Graphic Design Job Tutorial

I’m here with Jocelyn from Artisan Talent I’m going to ask the most basic question about
graphic design which is what is graphic design Graphic design is just basically putting life
to anything it could be an illustration it could be collateral it could be several different
types of varieties of things So let me put it this way Okay I’m assuming with graphic design you have
projects that cover print design web design app design Yes What is the breadth of projects that come
you know through an agency like this Okay so we work with It really is split between print and website
banners marketing collateral environmental design anything really packaging One of the big challenges for people who want
to be a graphic designer especially a graphic design freelancer is finding enough work right So let me ask you this what kind of graphic
design portfolio is the best sort of thing to build to get great graphic design projects The best graphic design portfolio I would
say typically has something that shows a variety of what they’ve done It could be little things little projects
that they may have worked on in school but then also something that they’ve worked on
with a client I always tend to go towards the white space
that’s just me personally So keep everything you have a lot of white
space Keep it simple I prefer something simple because if it’s
too much it’s really hard for you to portray your work You want to be very simple in your approach It’s like when you go to a gallery it’s art
on a white wall Right Right you don’t want a whole bit of other
stuff around you to distract you That makes sense Alright cool so let’s say you’re interested
in graphic design you want to build a graphic design career You put together a portfolio with lots of
white space White space What do you have as just like some straight
out tips graphic designer tips for people who want to get this kind of work If you’re looking for work specifically as
a designer I would say you want to show as much variety in your portfolio as possible
because you work for a corporate client one day but then also want to work for a smaller
client So you want to show your diversity because
otherwise if you’re streamlined into one particular aspect Right You don’t want to do that if you’re trying
to build up a freelance space Right you become limited You become limited One hundred percent People think that you only do print or you
only do black and white Yeah Or you only do web pages or you only do whatever
it happens to be You want to show a high variety of work Okay And yeah just keep it simple I mean it’s as
easy as that Alright cool So this is a weird question I guess but let’s
say you’ve gotten into graphic design you’ve got some skills and presuming Photoshop Illustrator
those sorts of design tools Adobe yeah Adobe You’ve built a graphic design portfolio you
know you’re kind of invested in your graphic designer career what happens when you get
to a graphic designer interview when you’re actually talking to a potential client What’s to look out for in the interview itself You definitely want to bring your portfolio
along with you whether it be a hard copy portfolio or a website I would say our clients have been really thrilled
with people who come in with an iPad presentation whether it be like a presentation designer
what have you You want to stand apart from all the other
designers so definitely going the extra mile You still need to have a resume That’s one thing that you have to remind the
designers of is it’s still important to have a resume so they can see the bullet points
and the specific work that you’ve done but also being able to prepare and break down
each project individually is really important so definitely having a portfolio to share
is important
