Wix Review: Pros and Cons of the Website Builder

Wix Review: Pros and Cons of the Website Builder

Welcome to another WebsiteToolTester review. This time we take a look at the new HTML5 website builder by Wix, which has replaced the previous Flash model. Almost 30 million sites have been built already according to Wix. As well as the really nice design, the spotlight is on the ease of use and the HTML5 technology. This new technology enables stunning image galleries and other animations, which are hard to find among other website builders. And although it might all sound a little too technical – you do not need any programming skills to use it. So can we speak of a successful revision or is there still some room for improvement? Stick to the end of this video to learn all about Wix’s pros & cons. Let’s now take a closer look at the website builder! Registration is quick and simple, and we selected a smart nightclub design. On the upper left-hand side the website editor is divided into the sections Pages, Design, Adding Elements, Settings and Wix App Market. This is where you edit pages, make color adjustments, add image galleries or integrate additional apps. On the upper right-hand side you can reverse changes, save your site and, finally, publish it. Let’s now add a new text block. To do so we select “Shapes and Lines” under “Add”. We click on “Box” and use “Box Style 2”. Then we add a header to the box. This is located at “Add” “Text” “Title”. Now we do the same for the text. As you see, it is very easy to operate and understand. Don’t forget: save your site! Under “Pages” you can add new pages to the navigation. This is also where you choose which pages will be shown. In addition, you can also determine in real time the level at which the page should appear. You can change the appearance of the navigation itself by clicking directly on Navigation. Overall design changes can be carried out via “Background”, “Colors” and “Fonts”. As you can see, you can give your website a new look with only a few clicks. There is, however, a considerable restriction compared to other providers: unfortunately it is not possible to change the design subsequently. That is why you need to consider carefully what suits you best! The app market offers many add-ons. Whether “like” buttons, chat functions or contact forms, you will find what you want here. If the suitable app is not available from Wix, you can integrate any HTML code you wish with the “iFrame/Embed” app. OK, let’s move to the administrative area. In four stages you can add a mobile website version. You will need this to optimize the display for mobile end devices such as smartphones. However, as you will notice, this page initially has nothing to do with your original site. You need to set up the layout and contents completely from scratch. Unfortunately, changes to the main site are also not transferred automatically. Wix should have found a better solution for that, as Jimdo, for example, has done. There you do not need to worry at all about setting up and maintaining the mobile website, as everything runs automatically in the background. The new website builder really works to a great degree, but we have had to conclude that Wix is still a little bit ahead of its time in some places. HTML5 is the right direction, but at the moment it still has a serious disadvantage: many older browsers, such as Internet Explorer 8 and older, cannot display the smart-looking websites that have been built with Wix. While this problem will solve itself over time, it is still very present right now. In this respect you are better placed with Jimdo or Weebly, for example. Wix is suitable primarily for impressive presentations. Artists, photographers, bands, wedding couples, etc are offered a platform on which they can present themselves wonderfully. It remains to be seen which areas of the website builder will be improved by Wix. As soon as it is ready, you will, as usual, find out all you need to know about the new version from us. Further providers can be found in our comparative overview at WebsiteToolTester.com. If you have enjoyed this video, we would be delighted to get a “like” on Facebook or YouTube. Thanks for watching!

I have issues with my page not loading 100% of the time. I bought a domain name before I decided to go with Wix for a free site, and have it set to forward and mask. There are times when it won't go through and it can't be found. Wix does not support me in trying to fix this.

Thanks for the video. I created a site in a small matter of time but there are two questions that I have. First, I want one of the pages to be secured with a username and password which I have set up but do I have to approve it BEFORE they can view the content, and second, Can I add javascript to the site? If so how?
    Thanks!

I like the mobile app option. My question is, does wix allow users (free users) use custom HTML/Java/CSS as I have my site completely built, essentially I am looking for a place to host it. I am currently using Zymic and it has too much down time. So can you upload already built pages etc, or can you copy and paste the HTML you have already written?

IF not can you suggest a good free reliable web hosting site? thanks!

Does Wix provide a security right click for photographers that display their work, so others can't steal the picture and save it. I just designed a website using WIX, and yes its easy and was very impressed with the program. But this question for me is? Does it offer this feature ..

I am really glad that such an biased review is being done. So thumbs up for that (y).

From the last couple of days I have been planning to set up an e-commerce store to sell high end fabrics to my dealers. But the huge problem which I am facing is that I did not find any cart or host which can allow my dealers to select the quantity at the checkout page 'in points'. Like if somebody wants to buy a fabric 10.5 metres! I will be highly obliged if you could help me out in any way possible.

All being said, kudos to your work.

@Mahesh Rajput This is possible with Shopify. There's an app available called "Buy the measurement". It's a bit pricey, but I can imagine there are also cheaper solutions. Just google it. Here you find our Shopify Review. You can test it 14 days for free:

I have built two websites with wix.com. They have excellent templates and it's very easy to use their tools even if you a beginner. The problem that made me leave is that they don't have the right tools are apps for an online store. for example you can't add shipping option, nor sizes nor colors and the worst no additional language. it's opening a shop with nice products and nice Window but you are telling your customer what to pick and no options. The other thing is that they don't have live support. you have to search for a question and read lot's of them and may be you will find an answer and if you don't….then you have to issue a ticket and the next day someone will answer you. In many cases they couldn't understand what I need and gave wrong answers but the worst is to send you a robot answer in which you will find in many tickets.

I need to build a website for t-shirts that allows me to have "pre order" options, as well as an "english-spanish" option. Even if it means I translate everything myself. I am just beginning to sell, and my site will be simple at first, but once business expands i will need more flexibility, meaning more options (jeans, backpacks, purses, etc), and no restrictions in my site changes. I need automatic changes saved into the mobile version as well, there is no way I would be able to handle both versions separately, as well as facebook and instagram, i'd go nuts!. I have no programming knowledge, and was considering WIX, but I am not convinced that it is the right website builder for me at the moment.

With my individual needs, which one would you recommend? Thanks in advance !

This video was very helpful and insightful. Thank you. I wanted to know more about Wix but when I went to their site it just said "sign up here, now for free." That did not give me much confidence on what I was getting myself into, as well as what their site was all about. Is Wix and e commerce site or just a place to create a regular website? I did not see anything about shopping cart, checkouts etc. I am a little confused as to what exactly it is. I will definitely check out your other videos to see about other sites you have reviewed.

Why would you ever use a closed source web development platform like wix or weebly when their are dragndrop website builders for wordpress which are just as easy as these closed proprietry systems ?  The functionality of wordpress is so much more than wix.  The SEO is infinitely better –  It is cheaper in the long run – even with a developer – and you can truly create a custom site.  Your not held hostage by the wix hosting platform either.  Move it wherever you want.  Spend the extra money you save on great hosting and have a super fast site that will have whatever functionality you can think of.  Did i mention multi users editing? superior social media plugins?  If you are small upstart and you build on wix now you will eventually have to go wordpress or similar in the end.  And you will NOT beable to use whatever you created in wix because the framework belongs to them.

Of all the various providers I've tried WIX is the easiest to build, provides a fantastic collection of apps [both free and pay] and is easy to update and change. I appreciate the Wixedu as this has enabled me to do it myself without extra costs, often by 'suppliers/builders/experts' who don't really know what they are doing. The Help is also easy to understand. I recommend it everyone I know and THANK YOU for this wonderful service. I also recommend the Premium package to all users who need their website for sales.

Don't waste your time or money on Wix. The editor doesn't work correctly and is frustrating to try and use. Editing text is a nightmare because the editor randomly selects text that you are not trying to change. They have no support at all, no phone number and you can't open a support ticket from their website. If your issue is not covered on their FAQ page your out of luck.

Once I figured out how to do most of what I wanted to do on my new Wix website, I was really happy with how it looked. My biggest hope is that they would offer text wrap. It takes me FOREVER to chop up my text into multiple boxes and arrange them around my image boxes. After all that, if I decide to make changes that affect the layout, I have to complete redo everything because the old layout no longer works! … Anyway, that said, I have a MAJOR problem with Wix that has left me almost to the point of tears: My nice website was coming up in a shambles: text and image boxes vanished – text boxes overlapped other text boxes – the mobile version was a nightmare! But no matter how many times I edited and fixed these problems – the next time I opened up my site, it would be all F-d up again! After days of this nightmare, I finally realized that it's only happening in Safari – my browser of choice! My layouts look normal in Firefox. I have the most up-to-date Safari and Flash, and I have no proxy, but it doesn't matter. This is so frustrating! I really don't want to have to switch to Firefox; I hate Firefox's tabs and URL bar. Anyone else having trouble with Wix in Safari? It took me months of research to finally decide on Wix for my blog, and now I feel like giving up.

Does anyone know if there is a way to copy-paste text into your Wix website that will actually retain the styles, such as bold and italic? I write long articles, but I hate having to go through every word to re-italicize or bold what was italicized and bolded before I pasted it into Wix. I have tried copying from TextEdit and from InDesign, but to no avail. I looked at all of Wix' text help suggestions, but could find nothing that addresses this issue.
