UTEP Joomla Tutorial – Part 4: Creating Menus

Welcome to the UTEP Joomla tutorial. In this
tutorial, we will be showing you how to use menus in Joomla. A menu holds the content
of the page. Let’s start where we left off. Here, we can see the articles we created in
the previous video, which were also put into their appropriate category. We will be adding
these articles to the main menu. Let’s look back at the website we are adding these to.
These are all of the currently available menus for this website. In Joomla, this has been
labeled as the, “Main Menu.” By the end of this video, we will have added two new menus
at the end of this list. They will be ‘Football’ and ‘Soccer’. Let’s go back to Joomla and
begin the process of turning these articles into menus. You can find menus in the ‘Menus’
tab. click on the ‘Menus’ tab and click on ‘Main Menu’. This will bring you to a page
where you will see all of the current menu items being used to create menus you can access
on the website. Let’s click on ‘New’, on the left hand side of the page. You will then
be taken to a new page where you will add a title to the menu, select the menu type,
and ‘Add Articles’ to the main menu. Let’s title this menu, “Football.” Just below that
you will select a ‘Menu Item Type’. Click on the blue ‘Select’ tab and a new list will
appear. In this case, we want to select ‘Articles’, then click ‘Single Article’. A new tab will
appear where you select the precise article for the menu. Click the ‘Select’ button. Go
ahead and choose ‘Football’. Make sure the status is ‘published’. Make sure this menu
item is set to the correct ‘Menu Location’, in this case, we want this set to the ‘Main
Menu’. Then click ‘Save and Close’. You will be brought back to the menu items list. If
you go to the end of the list you will find the ‘Football’ article has been added. Now,
let’s go back to the webpage and see our changes. Click the ‘Refresh’ button, and now the ‘Football
menu has been added. If you click on it you will see the content for it which we created
in the previous video. Let’s go ahead and add ‘Soccer’ to the main menu. Click on the
‘Menus’ tab. Click ‘Main Menu’. Click the ‘New’ button on the left hand side of the
page. Title the menu. Let’s call this one, “Soccer.” Select the ‘Menu Type’, select the
‘Menu Item Type’, select ‘Articles’, then select ‘Single Article’. Select the article
you want. Let’s choose ‘Soccer’. Make sure the status is ‘published’. Be sure the ‘Menu
Location’ is set to the ‘Main Menu’. Then, click ‘Save and Close’. Scroll down to the
end of the menu items list, and you will see that ‘Soccer’ has been added. Now, go back
to the website, refresh, and the ‘Soccer’ menu will appear beside ‘Football’. This concludes
our process of creating categories, which organize our articles, creating articles,
which were then placed in their appropriate category, and then using those articles to
create new menus on our website. You now have basic knowledge of updating content in a functioning
website through the use of Joomla.
