Treaty Elders Forum – September 2018

We have an opportunity now to move forward and it’s an opportunity for us to come together. Yes, we have our differences and we’ll always have our differences but it’s an opportunity for us to come together on the core things that matter. Our identity has been challenged over and over again. I don’t want that to continue. I want the rest of the population to be educated about who we are, what our place is in this part of the world, and to share the history. I’m from the stolen generation and I think a lot of the things that have been done in the past to our mob has been absolutely despicable. And if there can be a change made for our future generation it’s good for the elders here today and the elders across the regions in Victoria, but it’s also something good for our young ones to make their life ahead a lot brighter. We’ve got a great opportunity with the Andrews government to lead Australia because if it starts here I think the rest of the states will follow. We can make a difference. Not just for ourselves and not just for our ancestors but all our children and we need to grasp it now. For me personally treaty is about ensuring there’s a place for my grandchildren and their grandchildren and their grandchildren. It’s about giving recognition that we are the first people of this country. This always was, always will be, our land and it’s about time we were recognized for that and justice is done.
