Joomla tutorial: how to make language overrides (2018)

Hi everyone and welcome to another
tutorial of MaliCompany and in this tutorial we are going to learn you how
to make overrides in Joomla, so why do you need overrides? Well this is a very
good example of a website that is obviously in another language than
English, it’s in Dutch. And all my home menus, all my menus are in Dutch, my
header is in Dutch but my form isn’t. So this is actually a form that I used
from a module and as you can see there are some automatic lines in the form that
are in English and in this case I just wanted translate these ,but I do not have
to Dutch language package for this website because somehow it doesn’t work and
you can always have that that is the case and you you still want to use this
version of Joomla in English but you wanted to translate just these kind of
items in your website so how do you go about it well in this case you can just
use the template overrides language overrides and just it’s very simple to
do this go to extensions and then go to language and then go to language
overrides and here you see that you can actually add new language overrides so
I’m just gonna click new you can look for value or constant well normally I
just set it for value and then I’m just going to look at one of these
words, so let’s just start off with address. Just click it here or let’s
just start off with miscellaneous. Well, we don’t need everything we can just use
this word just copy pasted here miscellaneous and then just press search
so you see some hits here, you see actually no you see here the component
which has also miscellaneous information and you have here the template contact
miscellaneous. So, just pick up the first one and you can see here that just
generates a language constant and here’s the text that actually is corresponding
with this text and if I want to translate
I can just use here the Dutch version so just say information which is actually
or contact us which makes more sense here and which is sort of similar just
gonna click on save and then click on refresh and here you see it you have a
perfect translation without just going into installing the whole Dutch language
so if you want to do the other as well just use phones and emails
actually email and Dutch as well so now you don’t need to change them so just
press it click Save and new and we are going to put here phones and again it
gives me a number I just gonna pick the first one which is
probably enough and I am just go to translate it into Dutch which is ‘telefoon’ which is somewhat similar and then just say save or save and new and
just refresh homepage here and again a perfect translation, very
nice. So, just go to address click on address, click here and then go for
search well here you have another case you see
that there’s a lot of hits for address If you remember in the previous one,
we found actually the TLP which is short for template I guess and that was enough
to change the form so we can just skip all this and just go to more results. Just scroll down until we see the TLP. It is a very long list as you can see
they’re just a lot of hits with address and here you have a TPL sorry I said TLP, but is is TPL and just go to this one, again you have this constant over
here the string you can change to address which again is very similar in
touch Dutch, and say safe and close in this
case because we’re done and then we just refresh it and here you have it, we have a
perfect translation of telephone a perfect translation of address and a different
translation of miscellaneous information which is just sufficient enough to use
in Dutch to say ‘contact us ‘ which is somewhat of the same. Well, this is it for
today and it is how you can use template overrides or language overrides as you say
and it is very easy if you just don’t want to translate the whole Joomla
package or if you have a module which only has an English version or another
version of the different language and you want to translate into your own
language, so this is how you go about it if you have any other questions please
post them in the comments below and when we are looking very much forward to
look at those comments and hopefully to make that into another
video for next week’s because we are here every week and we’re trying to post
new videos every week so please do not forget to subscribe to our channel and
we hope to see you next week thank you and bye bye
