It’s A Major Thing – Digital Media Design

Hey I’m Corey! I’m a digital media design
major and today I’m going to show you what it’s like to be in this program This morning I’m heading to Mass Media and
Society Work in groups, We’re going to do the work on the media conglomerate
project and I wanted to go over the communication theory project withyou So I’m a double major with Broadcasting and Digital Media Design and the reason
I picked up the Digital Media Design major along with that is that it focuses
not only on video but also on audio design principles in general as the name
would apply some web and mobile stuff as I look more in the job market I kind of
noticed when somebody hires a quote-unquote video guy they’re not just
hiring a video guy they might be hiring a video guy who knows how to do graphic
design Even in my current job I’m video but I’m also audio so the DMD major made
it really great for me to be comfortable enough to do anything that somebody asks
me to do Now we’re heading to my Creative
Problem-Solving class The thing with the DMD majors I think they kind of expect
those those people to be self-starters A lot of the people who are in the DMD
major have side side gigs A DMD major who recently graduated from here has a photography company that she’s doing really really well with I do video on
the side Having those business skills is extremely important; you kind of get
these really cool looks into the business world that you honestly need to
know if you’re gonna do this Today for the WLUTV student crew I’m directing
one of our shows, HealthyU, in the studio TV crew has actually it’s really helped me in my troubleshooting skills it’s
really helped me in my live production skills a few other schools
that were a lot larger that I toured didn’t have anything like this and one
of the reasons that I did end up going here is because I would be able to
get first-hand experience first week freshman year and I did But as a DMD
major I think it’s extremely important to be able to have some live experience
because you need to know when things are gonna go wrong and how you’re gonna fix
it If I’m just if I’m shooting a film and I make a mistake during a shot I can
just redo the take; if you’re doing a live production you make a mistake you
got to keep rolling with it and it really helps you with perseverance in
that way that you just decide that you’ve got to keep rolling with it Three, two one; coming to Kathy… Today’s MADfest
here on campus and I’m about to go into a 3d animation session with Professor
Lee So MADfest I think is an extremely important part of the West Liberty
experience as an art major It’s for high school students and college students to
submit their work into multiple different categories and kind of get
recognition and praise for it This year I submitted an audio documentary a video
documentary a short film and a photo What they do is they bring in
professional judges to to judge your work and decide who wins best of show
who wins each of these categories and it’s kind of cool to see professional judges
say that your work is good I made a really important connection last year at
MADfest with a filmmaker who’s based out of New York who has paid me to help
him with a few shoots sense, so it’s kind of cool to be able to make those kind of
connections and get people to vouch for you not just your professors but people
out in the community Now we’re heading to college Hall for the award ceremony And first place in Short Film goes to Corey Knollinger! So in Digital Media Design there are
three different tracks; there’s web and mobile, there’s audio and then I do I’m
in the film and video track because I’m extremely passionate about about video
storytelling and storytelling in general and I think this is the coolest thing
about the DMD major; the DMD major is really a choose-your-own-adventure
and I think the best example of that is I did a 20 minute short film that I
wrote shot and edited over an entire course of about six months I’ve had a very
fun time in this major and being able to find myself creatively and I feel like
had I not picked up this is the second major I wouldn’t be the artist or the
the videographer I am today Today for my part-time job with West Virginia Public
Broadcasting I’m interviewing Dr. Horzempa So I work for West Virginia
Public Broadcasting It’s something that started out as an internship and then
after the internship was over they asked to keep me part-time and I was really
excited and really happy to do that A lot of what I learned in my classes
about storytelling especially and I had a writing class that was really really
important that helped me learn how to structure stories I also had a
documentary class that really helped me figure out how to structure things that
aren’t scripted I’s like painting but not knowing what color you have till you
you start painting As part of my job I’ve been asked to take photos, I’ve been
asked to record audio and cut audio, I’ve been asked to record and cut video, I’ve
been asked to edit photos That is all included in the Digital Media Design
major I hope that gave you a good idea of what
it’s like to be in the program For more information go to our website
