Backup Your Shopify Store

Backup Your Shopify Store

Have you ever downloaded an app to your
phone or to your website only to find out later that everything has now
crashed and oh by the way you’ve lost everything that was on there? Yeah I will
never get back my photos from 2015! Stupid iPhone. Look I’ve been there so
now I back everything up just to be on the safe side. Have you backed up
your Shopify store? Do you know how to back up your Shopify store? Guess what, there is no native back up in Shopify. I know Shopify does do their own backups but you actually don’t have access to any of
those files so what are you doing to protect your data? Your customer
information, your products, your theme construction if anything was custom
coded, any changes that you’ve made…? How are you protecting yourself? Because guess what? In the event that something gets deleted from Shopify, it’s gone.
Forever. You’re never gonna get those back. So yeah you should be protecting
your store, making sure you have backups regularly. I’m gonna walk you through
how to backup your store manually but know that it’s not everything. So I’ll
have a recommendation towards the end of the video so stick around. Let’s start
by backing up your theme. Start by going to your Sales Channel in the admin
panel. Select Online Store and then Themes. You should now see your current
theme with an Actions drop-down. Select Download theme file which will send you
an email. Done! To backup your products I’d also recommend manually backing up
your store data by exporting a CSV of your product details. This can be done by
selecting Products and then Export. To be clear though
there’s so much more that you need to be backing up.
You’ve got your collections, your images, blog posts or articles, any pages that
you’ve created. None of that is included in these exports. Let’s talk about how to
backup everything else. Sadly, Shopify doesn’t have a really easy
way or any way to do any of this. I usually recommend an app. I know who
wants to spend money on another app but I truly believe that this is money well
spent. Have you ever heard of Rewind? It is the
backup application for Shopify and totally worth the money you’re gonna
spend on it. I highly encourage you to check them out. This is not a paid
advertisement. I use them myself and I think it’s a really great tool. So how
often should you be backing up all your data and your theme information? Well if
you use Rewind they do it about once a week I think. If you do it manually by yourself with what we talked about before, I recommend that you at least back it up, if nothing else, at least back it up BEFORE you touch
anything. Notice I said BEFORE. Because you want to be able to revert back to whatever your original information was if something
happened. I usually do that any time before I make any changes to a store.
That includes uploading products, making changes to photos, if I’m going to touch
the theme in any way I make sure that I pull all these manual backups first
before I do anything, and then I do another backup when I’m done just to be
on the safe side. I will label it by the date backup both before and after so
that I make sure that I can look back and see whatever changes may have
happened. I also recommend that you backup at least once a month. It’s just
an easy way to remember so that in case you forgot by some chance to do it
before or after you made these changes, once a month is a good easy way to make
sure that you don’t miss anything. So set your calendar to remind you or add a
task list to your Asana or Trello whatever you use and make sure that you
don’t forget to do a backup at least once a month. Go right now do a backup
manually or purchase the app. Again I highly recommend Rewind. Check them out. I’ll put a link in the notes below but definitely backup your store if nothing
else because no one wants to start from scratch. No one wants to lose all of
their data so go back up your store right now.
