Adding and Editing HTML Blocks in Moodle

Adding and Editing HTML Blocks in Moodle

I want to do a little demonstration to
show you how you can organize the content on your Moodle course. Your
course is made up of a series of HTML blocks and HTML blocks are really the
the building blocks of your course. Each one of these little squares is an HTML
block and we can move those, we can delete those, and we can add new ones.
So the first thing I want to show you is how to delete some. I like to delete all
of the extra HTML blocks that I’m not likely to use in a course because when I
have all of these little blocks all around the outside of my course it makes
it look busy and students and aren’t sure what to pay attention to. So the
very first thing I do whenever I have a new course is to go through and delete
anything I’m not going to use. So I found that searching forums is really not very
helpful, so I’m going to delete that. I want to delete the latest news and I do
this by just clicking on the little arrow next to the gear and scrolling
down to delete latest news clip or whatever the block says, of course. So I
don’t need the upcoming events for my classes so I’m going to delete that
block, and I don’t like this Recent Activity because I keep track of things
other ways so I’m going to delete that block. So as you can see right away I’ve made
more room here for my body of my course to exist. Now you can also move blocks
around, so right now I’ve got Navigation on the top and then Administration under
that and then I’ve got something called Add a block that we’ll look at in a minute.
So let’s just rearrange the Administration and Navigation. I do that
by clicking on this little crosshair. It looks like you should be able to drag it
but instead just click on it and it will give you these options of places. There
will be several depending on where you, um, where you have openings and I’m just
going to move it up to the top. So I’ll click up at the top and now I’ve got my
Administration block up at the top. So the last thing I wanted to show you is
how to create a new HTML block, which is something you might need to do for your
course, and that’s down at the bottom on the left hand side and it says Add a block,
and if I click the arrow next to Add, I can choose different kinds of
blocks. So say, for example, I deleted one that I didn’t mean mean to, maybe I
want the activities block back again, I can just choose that right there. What I
do want to choose for right now is a blank HTML so if I choose HTML that’s
just going to give me a blank box. So there it is down at the bottom right
here and I’m going to move it up to the top and then I can edit that just like
any other block on my website by clicking the down arrow next to the
gears and say configure new HTML block and it gives me all of my editing tools.
So maybe I’ll say Class Notes will be the title of my block. You can
actually leave the block title empty if you want and only put something in the
content, which is nice if you want to put a picture in, but let’s call this Class
Notes and I’ll just make a note. This is where I’ll put special notes of interest.
This might be the kind of block that you could use if you wanted to have
announcements, for example. And where this block appears, I’m just going to say
leave it in its original location and display it on any main page of my course
so I’ll say Save Changes and here it is. It says this is where I’ll put special
notes and any time I want to add an a new announcement all I have to do is
click on this arrow and say Configure Class Notes block and it allows me to
update my notes. So this might be a place where I want to have a weekly
announcement. So we’ll look at some other uses of HTML blocks in a couple
additional videos this week
